We are delighted to welcome you back to Bickleigh Castle
The Perfect Luxury Staycation
We look forward to welcoming more groups on ‘staycations’ (or House Parties) this year. With our unique historic setting and many exciting opportunities for activities and outings on site and in the area, Bickleigh Castle is the ideal place for a large group of family and friends to stay for a weekend, a week, or longer. Generally, groups are of between 20 and 40 guests. Unlike many other venues, we are able to offer a very flexible arrangement depending on your requirements – self-catering, part-catered or fully-catered. Clearly these vary in price. The price includes exclusive use of the Estate (except for the private wing), meaning that no other people will be staying during your visit*.
The Estate comprises a large amount of land, some 45 acres of which is available for your enjoyment – the gardens, the 25 acre field across the river, and the 5 acre field next to the Chapel and the River Exe itself. Previous groups have held football games, zorbing, tug-of-war, cricket, archery and croquet. We have a good hot-tub for relaxation, but there is also the river for ‘wild swimming’, fly-fishing, kayaking and rafting. Our lane (public) is suitable for walking, running and cycling. We can arrange clay-pigeon shooting and horse-riding. We can lay on for you such things as a Treasure Hunt (for children or adults) and a history tour of the Castle. There is plenty of scope for more activities. Themed events are popular. We have had an almost entirely Medieval staycation where dress, meals, music and even activities were of the period. We soon have a ‘Great Gatsby’ themed weekend. But, even if you are not having an overall theme, on almost every ‘staycation’ there is a formal evening where people frequently wear Evening Dress and have a grand dinner in the first floor dining room after a drinks Reception in the Great Hall – but of course, you may prefer something different!
You are not, of course, tied to the Castle! We are in a beautiful part of mid-Devon affording some very good walks and cycle-rides. The local town of Tiverton has, apart from shops, its own Castle, horse-drawn canal barge trips, and an excellent museum. Exeter (nine miles) is famous for its medieval Cathedral, its historic Quay and many other items of interest. We are almost equidistant between the English Channel coast and the Atlantic coast – there are the famous promenades of Dawlish (where the GWR expresses pass), Torbay and Dartmouth and the open spaces of Dartmoor to the south, and the wilds of Exmoor and the beautiful sandy beaches near Barnstaple to the north. Tariff: we charge on a ‘per guest’ basis, which means that you only pay for the number of people attending. The weekend rate is £290 self-catering per person (£145 per night) or £395 fully-catered (full hotel services). Part-catered is between the two and will depend on requirements. Extended stays (e.g. a week) are usually accorded a percentage discount.

- We booked the castle as we had it recommended to us. We were thrilled with the thatched cottage that we stayed in. The room was lovely with 2 queen sized beds. We noticed straight away that the bedding was luxurious. Warm fluffy towels in the bathroom. The view was amazing. The family that run it were warm and welcoming and were happy to chat and make us feel at ease. - Helen H
