Things to do in our immediate area
Bickleigh Castle stands in the Exe Valley conservation area, with the River Exe running through our large Estate.
It is ideal as a base for outdoor activities. Not only can you play Croquet and Tennis on site, but we have a Hot Tub and very pleasant gardens in which to relax. We also have a play area for younger children and, indeed, children are especially welcome.
People have enjoyed rafting on the river in the Summer with inflatables, ‘wild swimming’ and fly fishing, but for serious watersports people it is ideal for kayaking, and you can paddle down the river for miles. If you wish to bring a kayak, we have suitable storage space.
If you like cycling, we can store cycles safely and there is our lane (much safer than the A396) which stretches all the way to Exeter, where you are unlikely to meet much more than tractors, horses, walkers and the occasional neighbour. If you cycle all the way to Exeter (about 10 miles) or half-way, to Thorverton, there is the luxury of some good pubs en route!
We also have several very good walking routes where you can start at the Castle.
In the village there are two eating places (Bickleigh Mill and the Fisherman’s Cot) and the Railway Centre (the village’s former station) which, with trains of all gauges, is a Mecca for rail fans and children.
There is the lovely 14th Century Parish Church as well as our own Saxon

- We booked the castle as we had it recommended to us. We were thrilled with the thatched cottage that we stayed in. The room was lovely with 2 queen sized beds. We noticed straight away that the bedding was luxurious. Warm fluffy towels in the bathroom. The view was amazing. The family that run it were warm and welcoming and were happy to chat and make us feel at ease. - Helen H
